Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight takes place for two weeks each year (this year it was Monday 25^th February to Sunday 10^th March) where people come together to promote, celebrate and raise money for Fairtrade. Fairtrade supports the people that grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year Fairtrade Fortnight focused on the people, in particular the women, who grow the cocoa in the chocolate we love so much.

Here at Houston Primary we aimed to raise money for and promote Fairtrade through a variety of ways.

The Enterprise Team ran a Fairtrade Stall selling lots of different Fairtrade items including chocolate bars, duck whistles and bracelets. They also sold raffle tickets for the wonderful Fairtrade hampers, made up from Fairtrade products kindly donated from Primary 4, 5 and 6. Overall over £300 was raised for Fairtrade. Thank you so much for all your support.

One Fairtrade hamper was gifted to Mrs Dawson after the children read about her story – celebrating her 106^th birthday. The children felt this would be a lovely gesture to give back to the local community.

Throughout the classes the children have been baking lots of lovely treats using Fairtrade products. Primary 3 made delicious hot chocolate. 

Across the school, the children have taken part in many Fairtrade activities including creating wonderful and informative Fairtrade posters and designing chocolate bar wrappers. All of this amazing work will be on display on our school Fairtrade board.
